The MERCRUISER REGULATOR (194-9502) is solely used to control the voltage of the outboard motor. The voltage that comes out of the regulator is limited to a certain level, protecting the boat's batteries from damage caused by overcharging. The voltage drops when a load is applied to the power system and when the battery is discharged. The regulator then increases the alternator's amperage output until the voltage level is restored, then tapers output to maintain the voltage stable.
