A composite membrane used in diaphragm pumps flexes up and down over a fuel bowl. The bowl contains an input and an outlet with check valves to guarantee that fluid only flows in one direction. A vacuum is well-created as the diaphragm raises, drawing fuel from the fuel tank into the fuel bowl. When the membrane is pushed downward by the actuation lever, fuel goes out under pressureroughly six (6) psi for carbureted engines. Mechanical diaphragm pumps are often used with older carbureted engines, and some less expensive aftermarket electric pumps also employ this design. Pumps using a diaphragm are straightforward in design and operation and have a long lifespan. A diaphragm pump typically functions even after 20 years of inactivity.
